Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for May 2017:
Cattle slaughter decreased by 2,300 head or 0.4% for May 2017 when compared with April 2017 and there was a year-on-year decrease of 45,700 head or 7.4%.
The number of calves slaughtered in May 2017 decreased by 1.9% month-on-month and when compared to this period last year decreased by 21,000 head or 42.6%.
Sheep slaughter in May 2017 stayed steady with an increase of 178 head compared with April 2017 and was down 53,300 head or 8.8% year-on-year.
Lamb slaughters decreased by 39,500 head or 2.2% for May 2017. Compared with May 2016, slaughters decreased by 141,300 head or 7.5%.
Pig slaughter increased marginally during the month, increasing by 345 head or 0.1% when compared to April 2017 and continued to increase year on year with slaughters up 5,800 head or 1.4% on this period last year.
